Retro Image Apparel Company Launches Popeye/Betty Boop Jersey Designs!

The Retro Image Apparel Co. has launched its two newest cycling jerseys featuring 1930's icons, Betty Boop and Popeye. The company acquired the license for Betty Boop and Popeye in late 2006 from King Features Syndicate Inc./Hearst Holdings. The two jersey designs are available now for Sping/Summer sales.

Betty Boop first appeared in the 6th Talkartoon starring Bimbo, entitled "Dizzy Dishes" (1930). Grim Natwick was the first animator to draw Betty, who had not yet been officially named. He took inspiration for Betty's spit curls from a song sheet of Helen Kane, "Boop Oop a Doop Girl." Her first starring role was in "Betty Coed" (1931), which marked the first time the name Betty was connected with the character. In 1934, Betty began appearing in comic strips drawn by Bud Counihan (though they were signed with Max Fleischer's name).

Popeye made his first public appearance on January 17, 1929 in Elzie Segar's then 10-year-old comic strip, "Thimble Theatre," which originally revolved around Olive Oyl's family. Popeye soon became the star, upstaging the original cast of characters. It was during this period that Popeye's spinach obsession became an indispensable plot device for his later adventures.

Sales in the first quarter have been brisk for late March/April delivery. The companys Direct Marketing Program guarantees warm customer care and an emphasis on purchase comfort.

The companys entire line is carried by three major distrubutors. Retro Image Apparel currently distributes directly to eight major web based and chain retailers including five Top 100 Retailers as seen in Bicyce Retailer and Industry News.

Jersey features:

  • High quality Euro Mesh fabric wicks away moisture
  • 19-inch, 3/4 hidden zipper
  • Three convenient rear pockets for storing essential gear
