Sports Engine signs Smith and Swail to endorse MOTORTABS™ electrolyte replacement drink

Tustin, California

Sports Engine, LLC, signed professional triathletes Spencer Smith (GBR) and Julie Swail (USA) to represent the company's sports drink, MOTORTABS™ Fluid Replacement System. They'll use it exclusively as their official "during" drink for the 2006 racing campaign.

The on-the-go, effervescent electrolyte/energy drink tablets, which dissolve when dropped into water, were launched in the triathlon market in October, 2005. Sponsorship is an integral part of the company's marketing program.

"Adding Spencer and Julie to our roster that already includes Ironman Hawaii runner-up and Ironman Florida winner Michellie Jones really solidifies our brand's presence in professional triathlon," Sports Engine LLC spokesman Greg Sellers says. "Spencer and Julie not only get results, but relate very well to consumers and will add a great deal of value to the brand."

Smith, of Palm Harbor, Fla., recently finished second at Ironman Arizona and third at the Ford Ironman 70.3 California, and says "all the products I choose to use are of the highest quality, and MOTORTABS is no different. It is easy to use and tasty, but above of all very effective." The former International Triathlon Union (ITU) world champion and Ironman Florida and Ironman Brazil winner also rode for Team Linda McCartney cycling, and always has been fans' favorite in Europe and North America.

Swail, currently 21st in the ITU world rankings, in 2005 won USA Triathlon's Haul to the Great Wall series, the Boston Triathlon and New York City Triathlon, and took second at the World Cup race in Edmonton. "MOTORTABS really is my favorite sports drink. It is light and refreshing, which encourages me to stay hydrated before and during workouts, and aids in my recovery afterwards."

Swail explains that "MOTORTABS is easy to transport in my bike jersey and even in my running shorts' pocket. I can refuel when necessary without having to wait until I get home – I just need to find a drinking fountain along my route and I've instantly got another bottle of sports drink." Chasing World Cup points requires a lot of travel, and adds Swail, "packing MOTORTABS in my bike case or travel bag is much lighter than lugging around pre-mixed bottles and much easier than dealing with powders and scoops while on the road." The Irvine, California-based star has her sights set on Beijing 2008.

Sellers says Sports Engine LLC will incorporate Smith and Swail into website, print, in-store POP, and other promotional materials throughout the year.

Designed for endurance athletes, each 20 gram tablet delivers 250 milligrams of sodium, 75 milligrams of potassium, 16 grams of carbohydrate (dextrose, sucrose and maltodextrin). MOTORTABS' air-tight, waterproof, individual packaging makes for clean, easy bottle refilling during training. Dissolution takes just a few minutes, and there's no need to shake the bottle. With no residual settling, cleaning bottles and hydration systems is quick and easy, too.
