Sportworks Announces Rack and Ride Transit Challenge Winners
10.05.2005 Woodinville, Washington
For four months -- from May through August -- North American transit agencies duked it out in the 2005 Sportworks Rack and Ride Transit Challenge. Which transit authority encouraged the most riders to incorporate bicycle and bus transit in their daily travel? Well, the winners have been announced, and they are:
Highest Percentage of Bicycle Boardings for Small Urban Area (50,000 to 199,999 population) Yuba-Sutter Transit, Marysville, California 3.55% bike share
Highest Total Number of Bicycle Boardings for Small Urban Area (50,000 to 199,999 population) Santa Cruz Metro, Santa Cruz, California 54,916 bicycles carried

According to statistics compiled by bikesontransit.org, the national average percentage of bicycle ridership per total bus boardings is just under 1/2 of one percent. Which means that the 2005 Sportworks Rack and Ride Transit Challenge winners posted numbers that are four to eight times higher than the national average.
"I want to congratulate all of the winners of the 2005 Sportworks Rack and Ride Transit Challenge," says Lisa Falvy, Vice-President of Multi-Modal Products for Sportworks. "The results of this challenge really signify just how far these programs have come in recent years. Bike-on-buses do attract new riders and ultimately increase ridership. The contest numbers are hard to argue with!"
