Sportworks to Announce Rack and Ride Transit Challenge Winners

09.09.2005
Woodinville, Washington

The U.S. city that can boast the most popular bicycle transit system in North America will be revealed soon as the Sportworks Rack and Ride Transit Challenge ended on August 31.

Running from May 1 through the end of August, the Challenge is simple: Which transit authority can encourage the most riders to incorporate bicycle and bus transit in their daily travel.

Agencies were divided into four categories depending on the total population the transit agencies service, from "Rural" of less than 50,000 to "Major Urban" of one million and over. Awards will be given in each category for percentage of bicycle boardings per total bus boardings and total number of bicycle boards. Twenty-four agencies participated and with only a few days left, three agencies are in a tight battle for first place.

"As we anticipated, the competition has been intense," says Lisa Falvy, Vice-President of Multi-Modal Products for Sportworks. "The 2005 Sportworks Rack and Ride Transit Challenge has given transit agencies an excellent chance to boast just how much bicycle ridership enhances their overall service."

According to statistics compiled by bikesontransit.org, the national average percentage of bicycle ridership per total bus boardings is just under 1/2 of one percent. The figure may appear low until you factor in that a bus bike rack can only hold two bikes (compared to 47 passengers) and that less than one percent of the population bicycles to work.

The 2005 Sportworks Rack and Ride Transit Challenge awards will be announced at the Sportworks booth #4543 at the International Public Transit EXPO in Dallas on September 27 at 2:00 p.m.
