Speedplay's Antique and Vintage Pedal Museum to be on display at Interbike

San Diego, California
Speedplay's Antique and Vintage Pedal Museum
to be on display at Interbike

Well over 100 antique and vintage pedals, from 1890s to 1990, will be on display at Speedplay booth #2921 at this year's Interbike.

The Speedplay Pedal Museum is the world's most complete collection of bicycle pedals and represents an historical timeline of pedal design. Numerous rare pedals are featured including the Ramsey Swinging Pedal of 1898 and the first commercial clipless pedal. In addition, the museum highlights the design timeline of toe straps, toe clips, slotted cleats and shoes.

"I started the museum because I was interested in pedal design and I wanted to share and preserve pedal history," says Richard Bryne, CEO of Speedplay, Inc. "I also became fascinated with the design and anecdotal information I have been able to collect." For example:

  • The first bicycle pedal to receive a U.S. patent was invented by Pierre Lallement in the 1860s.
  • An 1895 Columbia "woman's" pedal came complete with hearts stamped into the cage.
  • An advertisement for the Ramsey Swing pedal from 1898 boasted that your money would be refunded "if Ramsey pedals do not enable you to ascend hills with 25% less energy."
  • A 1930s Oppy toe clip was named after champion Australian cyclist turned politician Sir Hubert Opperman who was knighted in 1968.
  • The Cinelli M71 was the first commercial clipless pedal, produced in 1971, and featured a manual lock and unlock lever.

The museum will be open during regular show hours at Interbike, Las Vegas, September 28-30.
