Bikes for the World and Dick's Sporting Goods Team Up for Bike Trade-In Program

04.30.2012
Arlington, Virginia

Bikes for the World, the nation's largest non-profit bicycle reuse program is pleased to announce a partnership with Dick's Sporting Goods, Inc. (NYSE: DKS), the leading U.S. based full-line sporting goods retailer for a national bike trade-in initiative.

Together, Dick's Sporting Goods and Bikes for the World will collect and repurpose more than 3,000 donated bikes. The program began Sunday, April 29 and runs through Saturday, May 5.

Consumers will have the opportunity to trade-in a used bike at a local Dick's Sporting Goods store. In return, they will receive a discount toward a new bike purchase, and bikes that are turned in will be repurposed and distributed to U.S. and international communities through Bikes for the World.

"We are extremely proud to announce this relationship with Dicks Sporting Goods," said Keith Oberg, Director of Bikes for the World. "This type of initiative is essential to our mission; providing bicycles to lower income communities, enhancing livelihoods through better transportation and generating skilled employees in bicycle repair and maintenance." "Providing opportunities for people to have proper athletic and recreational equipment is a core belief of our company," said Lauren Hobart, Chief Marketing Officer of Dick's Sporting Goods. "We're pleased to be working with Bikes of the World on this program and look forward to having our customers participate."

Bikes for the World is an active and unique part of the bicycle advocacy community that supplies a dozen non-profit programs in the Washington DC area and around the world including Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Ghana, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Barbados, Haiti, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama. Since January 2005, Bikes for the World has donated on average almost 9,000 bikes annually, plus spare parts and accessories, valued at more than $2.5 million, quietly becoming the nation's largest bicycle reuse program. In March 2012, Bikes for the World placed its 60,000th bike for donation to help people who need affordable transportation overseas.

About Bikes for the World

A growing number of bicycle retailers serve as drop-off sites for the program. Donated bikes are shipped to underprivileged communities overseas where they transform lives by facilitating transportation to work, school, and health services; generating employment in reconditioning bikes; and contributing to human development and environmental conservation.
