Help Raise Awareness of National Bike Month
It's National Bike Month -- a time to celebrate bicycling -- and this week is National Bike-to-Work Week (May 16-20). Help promote bicycling in your community by writing a letter to the editor of your local paper, highlighting cycling's many benefits.

Bikes Belong has drafted a sample letter for you to use. Just cut and paste your name and town into the text, add a local angle if you want, and send it to your local paper. Your published commentary will inspire people to celebrate this week and month, and help motivate new cycling enthusiasts.

To view the sample letter, click here. If your letter is printed, please send us a clipping.

Bikes Belong Announces $25,000 in Grant Awards
Bikes Belong will award $25,000 in grants this month to three important cycling projects, focusing on education and ridership growth, new trail facilities, and making streets safer for cyclists. This brings the year's grants total to $80,000, and we expect to top $200,000 by December.

The latest grant recipients include:

The Adventure Cycling Association to develop and promote the Underground Railroad Bicycling Route, which will trace the corridor from Alabama to Pennsylvania that slaves followed to freedom in the mid-19th century

Colorado's Lower Valley Trails Group for construction of the South Canyon Trail, an extension of the Colorado River Trail west of Glenwood Springs

The Coastal Trails Coalition to help fund the Plum Island Bike Lanes, improving the safety of the Plum Island Turnpike near Newburyport, Massachusetts Since 1999, Bikes Belong's Grants Program has funded close to 100 grant proposals totaling $848,460 and leveraging more than $431 million in federal, state, and private funding. The next deadline for applications is May 30, 2005.

New 2005 Bicycle Friendly Communities Selected
The League of American Bicyclists recently announced the latest recipients of its Bicycle Friendly Communities designation. Bikes Belong is the lead sponsor of this program, which recognizes cities that support bicycling and works to replicate successes in other communities. The program evaluates cities in five categories -- engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation -- to determine their commitment to creating favorable conditions for bicyclists.

Five communities earned the Bicycle Friendly Community designation for the first time, led by silver-award winners Chicago, Illinois, and Scottsdale, Arizona. Eleven other communities received renewed recognition in this round, and six received honorable mention for notable achievement in at least one of the five evaluation categories.

No community has ever received the highest designation, platinum, and gold-level status has been awarded to only four citiesBoulder, Colorado; Corvallis and Portland, Oregon; and Palo Alto, California.

Industry Offers Insight into National Bike Summit Attendance
Bikes Belong recently completed a survey of bicycle industry members to learn why some did not attend the National Bike Summit March 1618, 2005, in Washington, D.C. More than 140 people responded to the survey, citing time constraints and the expense as key reasons they skipped the event.

The top two reasons for not attending "required too much time away from work" and "couldn't afford it" each garnered a 36.4 percent response. A whopping 70.3 percent said they would be more likely to come if the summit were two days instead of three. Respondents also indicated they would like a better understanding of the summit and its importance.

Bikes Belong will use the survey results to work with the event's organizer, the League of American Bicyclists, to increase attendance at future summits. For the complete survey results, click here.

BLC Industry Panel Discussion Now Online
Four bicycle industry leaders -- all of them board members of Bikes Belong -- spoke at the Bicycle Leadership Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, February 10, 2005, to discuss important questions facing the bicycle industry:

- Why does the bicycle business need to be a growth industry?
- What does the bicycle industry need to do to assure continuing growth?

Bill Fry of Bell Sports, Skip Hess of Giant, Steve Flagg of Quality Bicycle Products, and Kozo Shimano of Shimano shared their insights. To maximize the industry's potential, these experienced leaders believe we need to:

- Understand the changing U.S. demographics and how this will affect cycling participation
- Broaden the appeal of bicycling
- Create and publicize places and reasons to ride
- Cultivate a retail environment that is welcoming and helpful to all customers
