Act Now: Keep Bicycling Money in Your State
Your help is needed now to protect funding for bicycle projects in your state. The federal government is requiring state Departments of Transportation (DOT) to return a percentage of the money they were awarded for transportation projects in SAFETEA-LU - the $286.5 billion federal transportation law passed in 2005. The bicycling community worked hard to get a portion of this money for bicycling projects, much of it in the category of "Transportation Enhancements" funding. Now, the U.S. DOT is requiring state DOTs to return transportation money already awarded, a process called rescissions.

A recently released accounting of 2006 rescissions shows that bicycling lost several hundred million dollars of potential funding - most of it unobligated, unspent money from the previous (2001) federal transportation law. The 2007 rescissions threaten current funding. We can't let this happen!

You must act fast. State DOTs will make their decisions by April 18.

Here's what you need to do:

  • 1. Click here to customize the form letter drafted by the League of American Bicyclists. In the last paragraph, substitute "bicycle industry leader" for the words "concerned citizen and local advocate."
  • 2. If you have time, mention projects in your state that Transportation Enhancements have helped fund. Click here to search for projects in your state. For more information about Transportation Enhancements, click here.

League Hosts Best National Bike Summit Ever
We're expanding our influence in Washington, D.C. This year's National Bike Summit, March 14-16, was the biggest and most inclusive to date, strengthening bicycling's voice in our nation's capital. Presented by the League of American Bicyclists with top sponsorship from Bikes Belong, this annual gathering refined the national political bicycling agenda and coordinated a high-profile lobbying effort on Capitol Hill.

A snapshot of this year's summit:

  • Record attendance, with 435 participants
  • 92 industry attendees, including 10 Bikes Belong board members
  • 310 Congressional meetings
  • A successful BikesPAC fundraiser, attended by four U.S. Senators, that raised a record sum for Bikes Belong's political action committee
  • High-level IMBA sponsorship and participation
  • Reintroduction of the Bicycle Commuters Benefits Act in both the House and Senate
  • An inspirational speech by Floyd Landis, the 2006 Tour de France champion
  • A landmark meeting between President Bush, several Bikes Belong leaders, and national advocates to discuss bicycling

Pacific Joins Bikes Belong Board
In March, Jeff Frehner of Pacific Cycle was elected to the Bikes Belong Coalition board of directors. He becomes our 18th volunteer director. Frehner began his career in the bicycle industry in 1996 as an attorney and Human Resources Director for Quality Bicycle Products in Bloomington, Minnesota. In 2002, he joined Pacific Cycle, based in Madison, Wisconsin. Frehner was named Pacific's President and CEO in January 2007.

Pacific Cycle owns and distributes Schwinn, Mongoose, GT, Roadmaster, and other brands. Pacific is the leading supplier of bicycles to the U.S. mass-market channel and is also a key distributor to independent bicycle dealers.

Tim Blumenthal, executive director of Bikes Belong, said, "Jeff will be a great addition to our board. He knows our industry, he's an experienced bike advocate, and he represents one of the largest, most diverse companies in the business."

BikesPAC Event Raises $18,000
Four U.S. Senators, 50 industry representatives, and Tour de France champion Floyd Landis attended a rousing March 14 fundraiser for BikesPAC in Washington, D.C. The event raised more than $18,000 for BikesPAC-the bicycle industry's political action committee, which the Bikes Belong Coalition administers.

Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Richard Durbin (D-IL), John Ensign (R-NV), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) talked about their personal bicycling experiences and affirmed their support for our agenda. This was an exceptional bipartisan (or bike-partisan, as Congressman Earl Blumenauer likes to say) event on Capitol Hill.

BikesPAC is an essential part of Bikes Belong's strategy to increase federal support and funding for bicycle facilities and programs. In 2006, BikesPAC contributed $26,500 to the re-election campaigns of 15 members of Congress who back bicycling.

Bikes Belong Releases Toolkit for Bicycle Businesses
Bikes Belong members often ask: What can I do to improve bicycling in my community? To help answer this, Bikes Belong has produced a one-page guide designed primarily for retailers. It provides concise, easy tips on how to make towns more bicycle friendly, increase ridership, and grow bicycle businesses. Topics include:

  • Making your store the hub of the community
  • Supporting local advocacy groups
  • Connecting with local government and community leaders
  • Getting involved with national organizations and efforts

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) National Partnership has launched the SRTS State Network Project, with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Bikes Belong Coalition.

The project will work in nine states - California, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia - and the District of Columbia to encourage children to walk and bicycle to and from school. A primary goal of the project is to reach children at highest risk for obesity. The nine states and D.C. were selected based on both need and their capacity to support the program.

The State Network Project will inform and educate the general public about Safe Routes to School and share information about lessons learned from the initiative. In addition, the project will create a Guide to Developing a Successful Safe Routes to School State Network to help other states initiate their own programs. At the local level, each state network will identify and provide technical assistance to a low-income community or school.

The Bikes Belong Foundation is the host organization for the Safe Routes to School National Partnership and its three professional staff members. The partnership includes more than 265 groups nationwide.

Giant Bike to Benefit Safe Routes to School
In May, Giant Bicycles will begin selling a special edition Cypress bike to benefit Safe Routes to School. For each special edition bike sold, Giant will donate $20 to the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. The bike features the Safe Routes to School National Partnership logo on the frame, saddle, and water bottle. It also comes equipped with a taillight, seat bag, tire levers, cable lock, and patch kit.

The special edition bike will be available at select Giant dealers starting May 16.
