Safe Routes to School National Partnership Receives Major Grant
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has awarded a three-year grant of more than $600,000 to the Safe Routes to School National Partnership - a diverse, nationwide coalition that Bikes Belong has been funding and staffing since 2005. The grant will support the Partnership's efforts to advance Safe Routes to School efforts in 10 key states that will be selected based on needs, including high obesity levels. Pacific Cycle Joins Bikes Belong
Bikes Belong membership got a boost this month with the addition of Pacific Cycle, which owns and distributes Schwinn, Mongoose, GT, Roadmaster, and other brands. Pacific is the leading supplier of bicycles to the mass-market channel and also a distributor to IBDs. The company's membership will provide welcome support to our efforts to put more people on bicycles more often. Click here to see the complete Bikes Belong member list.

Bikes Belong is Top Sponsor of the Bicycle Leadership Conference
Bikes Belong is the lead financial supporter of the Bicycle Leadership Conference, being held February 4-6, 2007, in San Diego. Your attendance can pay long-term dividends for your business. Seminars in 2007 will highlight bicycle industry statistics and trends, industry challenges and opportunities, best practices in customer service, and bicycle retail concepts. Each attendee will receive an 80-page industry stats summary and accompanying CD, which may alone justify the conference fee. For more information and to register, click here.

Register Now for the National Bike Summit
Make your travel plans now for the National Bike Summit, being held March 14-16 in Washington, D.C. Bikes Belong is the lead sponsor of this event, and we urge you to attend.

Presented by the League of American Bicyclists, the National Bike Summit is a crucial opportunity for the bicycling community to communicate with top-level government leaders who have the power to dramatically improve bicycling in the U.S. With a new Congress in session, the time is ripe to strengthen our Capitol connections to ensure a strong future for bicycling.

This year, the bicycling community is developing a bold, new national agenda. Be part of the group that fine-tunes and presents it to federal leaders. Click here to register or learn more.

Pat Cunnane of Fuji Elected to Board of Directors
At its November 2006 board meeting, Bikes Belong Coalition elected Pat Cunnane, president of Fuji Bicycles, to its board of directors. He joins 16 other industry leaders directing Bikes Belong's efforts to put more people on bicycles more often.

A longtime proponent for the bicycle industry, Cunnane also serves on the board of the Bicycle Product Suppliers Association. In 2005, the League of American Bicyclists awarded Cunnane the Bicycle Industry Advocate Award to recognize his visionary work to improve bicycling. Bikes Belong BMX Issue Paper Now Online
Bikes Belong has just published a solutions-oriented report that examines BMX use of parks that have been built and managed primarily for skaters. These venues are a natural opportunity for bicycling, since BMXers enjoy many of the same features as skateboarders. Yet BMX use of skateparks has raised concerns about liability, compatibility with skateboarders, and potential damage to park surfaces. Our document offers advice on making it work. Click here to read the report.

Bikes Belong Renews Support of National Partners
For 2007, we have renewed our support of two important national bike advocacy organizations - Thunderhead Alliance and the National Complete Street Coalition. We pledged $20,000 to help Thunderhead Alliance train bicycle advocacy leaders to access federal funding. This is an important part of our effort to make sure the federal money allocated for bicycling in the 2005 Federal Transportation Law (SAFETEA-LU) is spent effectively.

In addition, we're continuing our support of the National Complete Streets Coalition in 2007. We've committed an additional $15,000 to bolster their work to establish new complete streets policies throughout the U.S. These efforts are helping create roads that safely accommodate all users, including bicyclists, pedestrians, automobiles, and public transit.

Safe Routes to School National Partnership Hiring
The Safe Routes to School National Partnership is seeking to fill two positions: State Network Manager and Program Assistant. Both positions are funded by the Bikes Belong Foundation using grant money recently awarded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The State Network Manager is a full-time position working on the State Network Implementation Project, a new effort to create SRTS state networks in 10 key states. Click here to read the complete job description.

The Program Assistant is a half-time position that will provide programmatic and administrative support to the Coordinator of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. Click here to read the complete job description.

2006 Annual Report Coming Soon
Bikes Belong will mail its 2006 Annual Report to all members in early February. The eight-page document outlines our 2006 income and expenditures, summarizes the important bicycle advocacy efforts we support, and recaps our accomplishments for the year. Look for it in your mailbox, or request a copy from avery@bikesbelong.org.

Bikes Belong 2006 Community Grants Total 21
The Bikes Belong Grants Program continues to enhance bicycling throughout the U.S. In November, we awarded five more grants, bringing the 2006 tally to 21 cash awards, totaling $159,850 in 18 states. Since 1999, we've awarded 132 grants, amounting to more than $1 million and leveraging $450 million of other funding. Our facilities grants alone have helped finance nearly 1,400 miles of bike paths and trails that link close to 6,000 miles of trail facilities.

Bikes Belong will award five more cash grants at the end of this month. The next deadline for grant applications is February 26. Click here to learn more.
