Bikes Belong Promotes Leverage at Interbike
Bikes Belong is all about leverage. Working together as an industry and with influential partners, we make big things happen for bicycling.

To illustrate our focus on leverage, Bikes Belong distributed 1,000 sets of free tire levers at Interbike September 27-29. Bicycle manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, and advocates flocked to the Bikes Belong booth to collect a lever set and learn how Bikes Belong works on behalf of the entire bike industry.

What do we mean by leverage?
Bikes Belong members invested $1 million in a lobbying effort that netted $4.5 billion in federal funds for bicycling and walking.

Through our Grants Program, we've awarded $1 million in cash that has leveraged $450 million in other funding.

We forge alliances with powerful partners such as AARP, the PTA, the American Heart Association, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to broaden our effectiveness.

When you join Bikes Belong, you join a collective effort that maximizes the return on your membership investment. Click here to learn more.

To get a free set of Bikes Belong tire levers, send your name and address to avery@bikesbelong.org. Thanks to Pedro's USA for providing the tire levers.

Announcing the Bikes Belong Foundation
Bikes Belong Coalition has launched an affiliated foundation to support bicycle safety projects and promote children's bicycling programs. The Bikes Belong Foundation received approval June 29 from the Internal Revenue Service and now operates as a 501c3 charitable non-profit organization. The foundation will help increase bicycling participation by facilitating funding from other foundations, government agencies, and individuals.

The Bikes Belong Foundation already backs two important projects:
The Paul David Clark Bicycling Safety Fund focuses on improving bicycle safety. The Safe Routes to School National Partnership, which debuted in August 2005, was created to enhance the new $600-million federal Safe Routes to School program.

The Bikes Belong Foundation is guided by a volunteer board of directors with Bikes Belong staff providing management expertise and support. The foundation is actively seeking new partners. Contributions from individuals are welcome and are tax deductible as permitted by law. For more information, click here.

BikesPAC Event Raises $13,585
Bikes Belong hosted a rousing fundraiser for BikesPAC September 27 in Las Vegas during Interbike. About 175 people attended the event, donating nearly $14,000 to the bicycle industry's bipartisan political action committee.

Through BikesPAC, Bikes Belong collects donations from individuals and contributes the money to the campaigns of members of Congress who support bicycling. This is an essential part of our strategy to increase federal funding for bicycle facilities and programs.

Safe Routes to School Meetings Energize National Network
The Safe Routes to School National Partnership is uniting the Safe Routes to School movement and providing resources for state and local SRTS programs. Bikes Belong is the primary sponsor of the partnership, whose 220+ members include AARP, the American Heart Association, and the PTA.

Bikes Belong hosted the second annual meeting of the partnership on September 8 in Madison, Wisconsin, during the Pro Walk/Pro Bike conference. Fifty-five partnership members attended, providing input to the Steering Committee to adopt a four-year strategic plan, set goals for the federal SRTS program, and elect officers. Click here to view the meeting minutes.

The partnership also co-sponsored a Practitioner's Workshop on September 5 with the National Center for Bicycling and Walking. Attended by more than 110 people involved with SRTS at the federal, state, and local levels, the workshop explored innovations in SRTS planning and initiatives using case studies from across the U.S.

New Brochure Describes Grants Program Successes
Bikes Belong has released a new printed piece that highlights the successes of our Grants Program.

Since 1999, Bikes Belong has funded 127 grant proposals in 40 states and the District of Columbia, awarding more than $1 million in cash and leveraging more than $450 million in federal, state, and private funding. Our facilities grants alone have helped build 1,350 miles of bike paths and trails that link more than 5,500 miles of bike facilities.

August Grant Awards Total $40,000
Bikes Belong awarded $40,000 in grants in August to five great bicycling projects. The money is helping fund a rail-trail in Indiana, a multi-use path in Florida, new singletrack in Wisconsin, a national cycling route network, and a bicycle safety and education program in Missouri. Our support for these paths, trails, and programs will enhance communities across the country, effectively putting more people on bicycles more often

Bikes Belong Commits as Lead Sponsor of 2007 Events
Bikes Belong will be the top sponsor of two important bicycle gatherings in early 2007: the Bicycle Leadership Conference and the National Bike Summit.

The Bicycle Leadership Conference is scheduled for February 4-7 in San Diego, California. Bringing together retailers and suppliers from throughout the country, the conference features valuable work sessions, networking, and group rides. Seminars will highlight bicycle industry statistics and trends, industry challenges and opportunities, best practices in customer service, and bicycle retail concepts.

March 14-16, the National Bike Summit takes place in Washington, D.C. This annual event organized by the League of American Bicyclists combines informative seminars, networking, and a coordinated lobbying effort on Capitol Hill. The 2007 summit focuses on crafting a visionary national strategy for bicycling in America.

Both of these events are important to the future of our industry. Your presence is important. Register today.

Bikes Belong Funds Bicycle Commuting Study
There's no doubt that biking to work is good for your health. But we need quantifiable data that affirms this benefit in order to convince government agencies and health organizations to support two-wheel travel.

Bikes Belong awarded $10,000 to support a Humboldt State University study to measure the effects of bicycle commuting on health. Conducted in conjunction with local bike-advocacy, planning, and transportation groups, the study will evaluate and quantify specific health and fitness benefits of bicycle commuting. We expect results in 2007.
