New Booklet Promotes Benefits of Bicycling
Bikes Belong has published a colorful, new, 16-page booklet entitled "Bicycling/Moving America Forward," which portrays bicycling and highlights its benefits to our economy, communities, health, families, and quality of life.

Packed with useful information and statistics, the booklet is a valuable tool to help advocates and industry representatives garner support for bicycling. Bikes Belong will distribute more than 20,000 copies to members of Congress, corporate leaders, mainstream media, elected officials, municipalities, and the bike industry.

Get your copy today. The booklet is included with the November issue of Bicycle Retailer and Industry News. (BRAIN sponsored the printing.) If you missed it or youd like additional copies, e-mail avery@bikesbelong.org. You can view a PDF of the booklet at bikesbelong.org.

Bicycling Making Headlines Nationwide
When gas prices rose to record levels in August, national media interest in cycling skyrocketed and has remained strong all fall. Bikes Belong has been an often-cited source on sales and participation trends. Weve talked about anecdotal reports of supplier and retailer sales gains and have emphasized that this is a time of rediscovery of all of bicyclings benefits. Weve been quoted in USA Today, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Barrons, dozens of other major city dailies, as well as national wire service articles and NPR and network television affiliate reports. This publicity is generating a buzz around bicycling nationwide, which we hope will inspire more people to dust off their trusty wheels or try cycling for the first time.

Bikes Belong Delivers Edible Message at Interbike
The Bikes Belong booth at Interbike was a hotbed of activity, with bicycle industry folks stopping for a visit and a slice of apple pie. Bikes Belong served 700 pieces of pie during the September 28-30 event to demonstrate how were working to grow the bicycle industry pie. A bigger pie means bigger slices for everyone.

Help us keep the pie growing by joining or renewing your Bikes Belong membership today.

BikesPAC Event Raises $15,000 for Political Action
At Interbike, Bikes Belong hosted a successful fundraiser for BikesPAC, the bicycle industrys political action committee. More than 80 people attended, contributing close to $15,000 to further the bicycling agenda in Washington, D.C.

Since 2003, BikesPAC has strategically donated to the campaigns of 24 members of Congressbicyclings best supporters in Washington, D.C. This is an essential part of our strategy to gain more support and additional funding for bicycling from the federal government.

Interbike Auction Boosts Safe Routes to School
A silent auction at Interbike raised $10,475 for the League of American Bicyclists important work on Safe Routes to School. Nineteen items were offered, including Trek Travel trips, a Specialized Stumpjumper, a Cycleops trainer, Rock Shox forks, signed jerseys, and other attire. A George Hincapie autographed Giro helmet was a hot item. Thanks to our supporters who donated items.

Safe Routes to School National Partnership Meeting Sets a Strategy
The first formal Safe Routes to School National Partnership meeting was held October 24 -25 in Washington, D.C. Forty diverse groups met to identify goals for the budding national Safe Routes to School movement and initiate a productive partnership with the Federal Highway Administration. Bikes Belong is the initial sponsor of the partnership, and the League of American Bicyclists provided additional support for the meeting.

One of the partnerships key goals is to maximize the effectiveness of the $612-million national Safe Routes to School program, which Congress authorized in August. More than 70 bicycling, walking, health, and government organizations have joined. For more information, click here. Additional groups can join at bikesbelong.org.

First Platinum Bicycle Friendly Community Announced
In September, the League of American Bicyclists awarded Davis, California, the coveted platinum Bicycle Friendly Community designation. Davis is the first city to achieve this level. Bikes Belong is the primary sponsor of the Bicycle Friendly Communities program, which recognizes cities that support bicycling and works to replicate their successes in other communities.

Two citiesAlbuquerque, New Mexico, and Vancouver, Washingtonwere newly designated at the bronze level, bringing the total number of communities recognized to 52.
