CALIFORNIA CONSIDERS BILL REQUIRING SALES TAX ON ALL INTERNET SALES

Dealers Encouraged To Contact Representatives
For some time the NBDA has promoted its support of fair trade in business taxation, whether it be via physical store or internet, and has aligned itself with organizations like the e-fairness coalition. Now, California's Revenue and Taxation Committee will hear about AB 178, an act to amend Section 6203 of the Revenue and Taxation Code in alignment with these same ideals of collecting sales tax equally. In California alone, some $50 million in annual tax revenue is never collected due to out-of-state internet retailers who are not required to collect, and therefore not required to return state sales tax. To support this effort, the office of Assemblymember Nancy Skinner requests California bicycle retailers to write their state representatives. A sample letter and details on ACT AB 178 can be downloaded below.

NBDA SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS IMPRESSED BY NATIONAL BIKE SUMMIT
In a post-event survey, NBDA scholarship winners of the 2009 National Bike Summit had incredible comments of industry unity and personal experiences related to the annual event in D.C. Here are some of the best:

"...The Summit exceeded all expectations...In addition, the opportunity to meet with members of Congress was rewarding, and hopefully productive in advancing the cause of bike issues in our country."

"I loved it. I thought the speakers and breakout sessions were very informative and inspiring..."

"I feel [our business voice at the Summit] was valued because of the direct impact to state revenue the business plays in generating funding for these causes at the state level."

"This was wonderful in so many ways and something that I will never miss again!"

The 2009 National Bike Summit is presented annually by the League of American Bicyclists in Washington, D.C. The NBDA encourages all dealers and industry personnel to participate to support and advocate for the future of cycling in America. Click here for the complete list of 2009 NBDA Scholarship Winners

NBDA AND THE LEAGUE DEVELOP NEW CYCLING TRAINING PROGRAM

The National Bicycle Dealers Association and League of American Bicyclists have joined to bring introductory cycling training through NBDA member stores, along with a host of other benefits specifically designed for specialty bicycle retailers. The two organizations have developed a new turnkey educational dealer-specific safety instructor program utilizing successful League programs such as BikeED and ROAD 1 as benchmarks.

Although still in its "beta-test" format, the goal of the partnership is to make the dealer a more prominent venue for the public's learning of cycling skills and safety training, while enhancing membership benefits for both organizations. The League's large consumer membership base will be directed to NBDA member dealers as the primary support vehicle for these new cycling safety resources. "This is a partnership about cycling safety, education, enjoyment-as well as business; and it's only natural that NBDA dealers are the venue to deliver this unique service as they are the pillar of their local cycling community," states Fred Clements, NBDA Executive Director.

A "Cycling Skills and Enjoyment" promotional tool kit has been developed to increase dealer staff awareness of bike education programs and the business benefits of being League Cycling instructors (LCI's). Once in place, the League will begin communicating to their membership base which dealers have these new tools available, and the benefits from learning these safety programs to increase cycling enjoyment.

PROFITABILITY PROJECT CONTINUES INCREASING BOTTOM LINES OF RETAILERS

Referred to as P2, the NBDA Profitability Project facilitated by The Mann Group improves business for those Specialty Bike Retailers who participate. The format is similar to that of groups like "20 Groups", that has been so successful in the automobile/motorsports/RV/camping industries or Mastermind Groups, Dealer Groups and YPO (Young President's Organization). Each group is made up of non-competing dealers who meet to learn, compare, network, examine and analyze specific data from their business to help and support each other in business operation and strategy. Each group will meet 2x per year in alternating member's locations and there is an administrative fee to participate, however the value will far outweigh the fee - see the endorsements from current members below...

"Being able to sit at the same table as some of the smartest bicycle retailers in the industry, much less being privy to their best practices and greatest ideas, is an opportunity many would not pass up" - Rick Snyder, Mike's Bike Shop

"Participation in a P2 group is a great way to sharpen your saw. As much as you might think you are on the right track, many minds are still better than one!" - Randall G. Clark, Bicycle Garage Indy

"Simply, the best investment of my time ever! Sharing KPI's (Key Performance Indicators) with fellow non-competing dealers along with a visit and critique of the host bicycle store has consistently moved us along to the next level. When another group forms, sign up. You won't regret it." -Doug Newman, The Bike Route

Dealers interested to participate can email The Mann Group at info@manngroup.net or phone 828-645-0974 for more info.
