NBDA ADDS $7500 TO QUICK-RELEASE FIGHT
New donation to be matched by suppliers.

Following an initial contribution of $7500 last summer, the NBDA Board has voted to commit another $7500 to defend the ubiquitous quick-release axle. The latest contribution will be matched by the supplier side of the industry, said NBDA Executive Director Fred Clements.

The fight is against a ban on quick-release axles that has been proposed in the New Jersey legislature. While the law, if passed, would affect only New Jersey, it might set a national trend, making the fight a national issue. The bill exempts axles that also have a "secondary safety device," but fork tips apparently do not qualify for the exemption and there is currently no other technology that would. The proposed law was a response to injuries to children riding Wal-Mart bikes with quick-release wheels, Clements said. But with the exception of some high-end BMX bikes, the kids bikes sold by independent dealers do not have quick-release axles anyway. The New Jersey bill as written would ban quick-releases on all bikes, adult as well as juvenile. Funds contributed by the NBDA and the Bicycle Products Suppliers Association are to be used to hire a lobbyist to make the case against the bill.-John Francis, Editor, NBDA Outspokin'

NBDA AND THE LEAGUE JOIN TO PROMOTE A LIFELONG ENJOYMENT OF BICYCLING
The NBDA Commits Over $100,000 for Dealer Specific Cycling Programs.
The National Bicycle Dealers Association and League of American Bicyclists have joined to bring introductory Vehicular Cycling training through NBDA member stores, along with a host of other benefits specifically designed for specialty bicycle retailers.

The goal of the partnership is to make the dealer a more prominent venue for the public's learning of cycling skills and safety training, while enhancing membership benefits for both organizations. The League's large consumer membership base will be directed to NBDA member dealers as primary support for these new cycling safety resources; and in turn the NBDA will work with the League to create programs that meet dealer's needs.

"This is a partnership about cycling safety, education, enjoyment - as well as business; and it's perfect that NBDA member dealers deliver these unique services - as they are the pillar of their local cycling community," states Fred Clements, NBDA Executive Director.

The two organizations will begin developing a new turnkey educational dealer-specific safety instructor program utilizing successful League initiatives such as BikeED and ROAD 1 as benchmarks. The launch of the program will include a "Cycling Skills and Enjoyment" promotional tool kit to increase dealer staff awareness and the business benefits of being Licensed Cycling Instructors (LCI's).

"The League's BikeEd program and the NBDA are a natural fit: We're both trying to get more people on bicycles as safely as possible. We look forward to a great partnership," said Andy Clarke, Executive Director, League of American Bicyclists.

The NBDA will also continue to sponsor, support and encourage dealer participation at the League's annual National Bike Summit, with the 2008 event staging next week in Washington, D.C. March 4 - 6. The NBDA has committed more than $100,000 for the initial two-year agreement.
