NBDA e-News Update: May 2010

05.04.2010
Costa Mesa, California

FRIDAY MAY 7 - DEADLINE TO CONTRIBUTE TO NEW COST OF DOING BUSINESS STUDY

TAKE THE SURVEY ONLINE AT NBDASURVEY.COM

The NBDA invites you to participate in the new 2010-11 Cost of Doing Business Survey of bicycle stores. If you do, you will receive a free and customized report about your business with a value of $150 ($75 for NBDA members). Bicycle store owners and managers who use the NBDA's Cost of Doing Business Survey know how valuable this report is to their businesses. The study provides key measures for inventory, space, personnel, sales, shrinkage, margins, etc., to help you compare your business with industry benchmarks, and enable you to run your business more profitably. The report allows dealers to compare their business to all dealers, dealers of similar size, and even to "High Profit" dealers so you can see how more profitable stores differ from the average. Participants will also receive a special report that shows their company's performance figures alongside the appropriate industry averages (valid e-mail address required to receive reports).

The final deadline to participate has been extended to May 7. All NBDA dealers were mailed the questionnaire in March, along with a selection of non-members. You can now also respond online at http://www.nbdasurvey.com The Cost of Doing Business study has been called the most valuable research conducted by the NBDA because of its direct benefit to dealers in establishing benchmarks for improvement. For questions and comments, please contact the NBDA office by e-mail: info@nbda.com

NBDA, GROWTH CYCLE PARTNER - DEVELOPING BUSINESS TRAINING TOOLS FOR BIKE DEALERS

The NBDA Board approved a three-year partnership for Growth Cycle to create a dealer-focused staff training program for U.S. bicycle retailers.

Selling Cycling, Growth Cycle's current program that's been purchased and used in over 1,600 stores, contains training for sales and customer service, as well as brand-specific product training.

The new brand-neutral program, which rolls out in January 2011, will focus solely on retail topics such as sales technique, customer service, store branding, bike fitting, selling service, merchandising and marketing.

"The list of potential training topics is long," said Growth Cycle president Ray Keener. "We'll poll NBDA members to find out where their biggest needs are, then create fresh training to match."

The agreement calls for Growth Cycle to produce two hours of new content for each of the 2011, 2012, and 2013 seasons. Ownership of the program is 50/50, with pricing to be determined as the content evolves.

"This new initiative fits in perfectly with the NBDA's Independent Concept program, as well as our long-term mission in training," said NBDA executive director Fred Clements. "We're looking forward to reaching more retailers and standardizing industry best practices."

Dealer surveying will begin in May, a steering committee of training-savvy retailers will form, and a meeting at Interbike in September will finalize content for production in October and November.

NBDA Board member James Moore of Moore's Bicycle Shop in Hattiesburg, MS, has agreed to serve on the steering committee. "We already use many of the Selling Cycling principles in our store, and we're happy to be involved in expanding those concepts," Moore said.
