Forest Service Issues Statement About Unauthorized Trails in Lake Tahoe Basin
The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is asking riders to work with the agency on trail creation, rather than constructing illegal trails on public lands. An agency statement reads, "New user-constructed mountain bike trails are appearing all over the Lake Tahoe Basin, causing safety concerns, as well as damage to natural and historical resources." IMBA offers a substantial number of resources designed to help mountain bikers and land managers work together on trails -- including ones that offer technical challenges:

- Building Bulldozer-Proof Trails

- Involving Freeriders in Your Club

- Managing Mountain Biking: IMBA's Guide to Providing Great Riding (This 256-page book is our most complete resource.)

IMBA California Policy Advisor Tom Ward has meetings scheduled with Forest Service staff in Lake Tahoe. Stay tuned for further developments.

Trails Near Santa Barbara Reopen Thanks to Volunteer Efforts
The US Forest Service, County of Santa Barbara and City of Santa Barbara will reopen several trails that were damaged by the Jesusita Fire. Riders with the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers and other local groups helped revive Rattlesnake Trail, West Fork of Cold Spring Trail, and the Jesusita Trail from San Roque Road to Inspiration Point. "The Tunnel and Tunnel Connector trails, and the eastern leg of the Jesusita Trail from Inspiration Point to Tunnel Trail will remain closed due to additional clean-up and stabilization work that needs to be done over the next couple months to aid in the recovery efforts for the Mission Canyon area, said Santa Barbara County Parks Director Daniel C. Hernandez.

Mountain Bike Access to Bill's Trail in Marin Faces Challenge
California State Parks recently announced that it will delay its plans to open Bill's Trail to bicycle use, but mountain bikers are still pushing for more equitable access to this and other trails in Marin County. "Our position has not changed," notes IMBA California Policy Advisor Tom Ward. "Mountain biking is a popular activity that promotes health and well-being, and it's compatible with other recreational uses. We fully expect that state parks will soon introduce a new plan to facilitate increased bicycle access."

New IMBA Web Pages Offer Guidance for Map Projects
IMBA's online resources offer nearly 2,000 web pages. Our latest section offers best practices and guidance for online and print map projects. Maps are a great way to spread the word about your clubs' proudest on-the-ground achievements -- equipped with mapmaking software and data collected by Global Positioning System GPS devices, it is possible to create beautiful maps that are comparable in quality to the work of professional cartographers. video

Augusta Will Host 2010 World Summit
Augusta, Georgia, will host the 2010 IMBA World Summit (May 5-8). The event, expected to be the largest yet in IMBA's history of hosting international summits. Topics will include new programs for IMBA clubs, developing destination and urban trail networks, land conservation and sustainable trailbuilding and youth outreach. In addition to informative seminars and networking, the gathering will feature great parties and plenty of riding -- including a catered tour of the Forks Area Trail System (FATS) an IMBA Epic.
