IMBA Asks For, Gets Veto on CA Wilderness Bill
On Sept. 27, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed legislation that would have prompted the adoption of state Wilderness in Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Santa Clara and Sonoma counties. Sponsored by the California Wilderness Coalition, the bill directed assessments of selected state lands -- including the popular mountain biking destinations of Robert Louis Stevenson State Park and Henry W. Coe State Park -- for possible Wilderness designations. Policy Advisor Tom Ward consulted with the governor's office and the California State Assembly, supplying materials about the popularity of mountain biking in Northern California and illustrating the low-impact nature of the sport.

New King Range Mountain Bike Trail Dedicated on National Public Lands Day
Mountain bike enthusiasts joined trailbuilding volunteers and BLM staff on National Public Lands Day to celebrate completion of the Paradise Royale Mountain Bike Trail in the King Range National Conservation Area. The NLPD celebration recognized groups and individuals who contributed 4,000 volunteer hours to build the 14-mile loop trail. It is the only public land trail in northern California designed specifically for mountain bikes.

Rule Change in National Parks Will Benefit Cyclists
After more than a decade of asking, it seems that IMBA has succeeded in convincing the National Park Service to streamline the requirements for adding mountain bike trails. The new policy would empower park superintendents to manage trails for bicycles, without sacrificing environmental review or public comment opportunities.

Trailbuilding and Habitat Protection: Success Stories Brought to You by Shimano
With generous support from Shimano, IMBA is documenting success stories that reveal the painstaking care mountain bikers use in designing environmentally friendly trails. Do you have a similar story to share? Send a message to info@imba.com and outline the project in a paragraph or two. We'll choose some of the best stories and document additional projects in 2009.

Biketoberfest Celebrates Beer and Bikes
Join a great festival with over a dozen California brewers, and the latest designs of hand-built bike builders including Calfee, Breezer, Retrotec, KISH, Soulcraft and many more. Bike shops, clubs, teams, land management and environmental representatives will be on hand as well. Activities include guided group road and mountain bike rides, (led by Joe Breeze, Charlie Kelly and Team LunaChix), a vintage bicycle exhibit; demo bikes from Vantana and others and and fun events for kids. Live music by the MONOPHONICS and the Mad Maggies.
