IMBA Club and Rep eNews: January 2008

01.14.2008
Boulder, Colorado

Join IMBA at the 2008 National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C.
Join us March 4-6 in Washington, D.C. as we gather with hundreds of passionate cyclists to walk the halls of Congress and show the power of our numbers. The Summit also includes an informative day of concurrent sessions covering the most important cycling issues, including those for mountain bikers. For clubs and individuals with limited budgets, scholarships are available.

New Position Added to Support Affiliated Clubs
Ryan Schutz has re-joined the IMBA team, manning the new position of Affiliate Programs Manager. Ryan is a longtime cycling advocate who has recently retired from a two-year stint on the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew. Schutz will collaborate with IMBA staff and local advocates to develop programs and services aimed at enhancing the capabilities of IMBA's regional and grassroots partners. Reach him at ryan.schutz@imba.com.

Calling All Clubs: Attend the 2008 IMBA World Summit!
Make sure your club is represented among the hundreds of mountain biking enthusiasts from around the globe gathering in Park City, Utah, June 18-21 for the 2008 IMBA World Summit. IMBA Summits bring mountain biking advocates, land managers, ski resort professionals, trailbuilders, tourism officials and the bike industry together for collaboration, planning and celebration.

New Year's Resolution: Join Team IMBA at 24 Hours of Moab
Looking for a challenge to take on in the new year? Find personal gratification, improve your fitness and raise funding for better trails by joining Team IMBA at the 24 Hours of Moab, October 11-12, 2008. Bring your own team or join a crew of motivated riders and advocates for two days of fun in mountain biking's Mecca.

Don't Call Us Mechanized: Why Grouping Cycling with Motorized Uses is Damaging
Regardless of your personal opinions about motorized travel on trails, it's smart to make sure bicycles aren't lumped together with motorized vehicles in local forest and park management plans. Bicycling is a quiet, human-powered, low-impact form of recreation that deserves to be managed alongside other non-motorized uses. Learn more here.

Conservation Actions Performed By Mountain Bikers -- Send Us Your Stories
Has your club performed a conservation action lately? Let IMBA know about it. Whether it's rerouting an eroded trail, protecting sensitive plants or animals or raising environmental awareness, help us spread the word about mountain bikers' good deeds.

Colorado Club Supports New Mt. Sneffels Wilderness Area Proposal
The Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Trail Association (COPMOBA) recently endorsed a new Wilderness proposal adjacent the existing Mount Sneffels Wilderness in southwestern Colorado. The proposal's proponents agreed not to impinge upon existing mountain bike access, making COPMOBA's decision easier. Read more about IMBA's land protection policies.

Do Oil, Gas or Mining Affect Your Trails or Viewsheds?
IMBA wants to know if your singletrack experience is directly or indirectly transformed by natural resource extraction. Potential impacts could include new leases that block trail access, wells or drilling stations obstructing viewsheds or industry workers filling local hotels to capacity. Let us know. Your information will help IMBA gauge the oil, gas and mining industry's effect on mountain biking.
