House Approves North Coast Wilderness Bill
On July 24, the House approved the North Coast Wilderness Bill, clearing the way for a Senate vote where it will likely pass. Although the legislation is not perfect, IMBA California supports the bill because it preserves important mountain biking opportunities, and allows for significant new ones.

Register Now for NORCAMBA Tahoe Getaway
Join NorCAMBA for a great weekend of companionship, camping, partying, riding and stewardship. We will be camping at Martis Creek, south of Truckee, just off SR 267. Some will arrive 8/16, while most will show up on 8/18 to prepare for a great day Saturday, giving back to the trails community by sponsoring a trailwork project on a section of the Tahoe Rim Trail, west of Brockway summit. There will be a short ride after trailwork, then an enjoyable campsite dinner, party, and outdoors movie and slide show. Sunday 8/20 features a pancake breakfast in the morning, and then a choice selection of fabulous singletrack trails to ride. Registration for the weekend is free, but required so we can make sure we have enough pancake batter, trail work tools, ride maps, and campsites.

IMBA Reps Influence Governor's Roadless Petition
Governor Schwarzenegger has filed a petition with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to ban roadbuilding and large logging projects on 4.4 million acres that are designated Roadless by the U.S. Forest Service. IMBA California Policy Advisor Tom Ward joined Reps Jim and Cathy Haagen-Smit for meetings with the Governor's Resources Agency during the development of the petition, to insure that mountain biking interests were represented.

Forest Service Route Designation Rolls On
The administrators of Region 5 of the U.S. Forest Service have every intention of completing their route inventory process by 2008, even though some forests are slightly behind in the process. IMBA California Policy Advisor Tom Ward [] is working with key Forest officials to insure that the inventory process does not adversely affect mountain bike trails. It is vitally important for mountain bikers to review route inventory maps to make sure their trails are identified.

BLM Management Plan Will Benefit Mountain Bikers
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recently released a proposed Resource Management Plan and final environmental impact statement for approximately 270,000 acres of public land administered by the Ukiah Field Office. Thanks to the hard work by IMBA Reps and local riders, the plan will benefit mountain bikers. The BLM will soon be starting a formal trail plan and IMBA will stay involved in guiding that plan.

King Range To Be Next Mountain Biking Mecca
The Bureau of Land Management, local mountain bikers, volunteer trail builders and IMBA are working together to create an incredible destination riding area in the King Range of Northern California. Construction is underway on a pristine trail system that will feature over 40 miles of singletrack. More volunteer trail builders are always needed. Get involved by contacting the BLM's Scott Adams at 707-986-5403.

Auburn State Recreation Area Adopts New Planning Process
A 38,000-acre natural area in the central Sierra foothills, the Auburn State Recreation Area is a popular riding area with gorgeous singletrack trails. California State Parks and the U.S Bureau of Reclamation will soon revise their joint management plan for the Auburn trails. IMBA California has attended several meetings with promising results. However, mountain bikers need to get involved in the public input process and advocate for expansion of the existing trail network. The public comment period will be throughout 2006 and into early 2007.

IMBA CA Assists Town of Mammoth Lakes
Mammoth Lakes has released a draft Mobility Plan to deal with circulation issues related to traffic congestion, bike and pedestrian facilities and recreational trails. Local riders contacted IMBA for assistance, and Rep Jim Hasenauer [] subsequently met with the locals, spoke to USFS officials and offered the town IMBA's assistance. Hasenauer identified several federal and state grant opportunities that could support trail development, and will continue working on the Mammoth project.
