IMBA California Campaign: March 2006 eNewsletter

03.15.2006
Boulder, Colorado

The International Mountain Bicycling Association presents a monthly eNewsletter focused on issues that affect Californians.

ATTEND THE MOUNTAIN BIKE SUMMIT AT SEA OTTER: APRIL 7
NorCAMBA and IMBA will host the 2nd Annual California Mountain Bike Advocacy Summit on Friday, April 7, at the Sea Otter Classic races in Monterey. There will be educational sessions and strategy discussions in the afternoon, followed by a dinner where participants will meet IMBA's new California Policy Advisor Tom Ward. Last year was very beneficial in gathering information about our advocacy efforts and challenges. This year the summit will focus on regional issues and establish teams to work together to make progress on key initiatives to protect and improve mountain biking in California. Meeting from 3 to 6:30, with a free dinner and door prizes. seaotterclassic.com.

REDDING NATIONAL PARK UNIT NOW BOASTS 66 MILES OF SINGLETRACK
Granite outcroppings, cascading waterfalls and sunny skies greeted the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew as they made their way to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (NRA), just outside of Redding, CA, February 2-6. As the first of 12 Trail Care Crew visits to National Park Service sites in 2006, developed through IMBA's new partnership agreement with NPS, the Redding Mountain Bike club (RMB) seized the opportunity to make the weekend one in which the mountain bike community could be proud. Whiskeytown's spectacular natural resources and diverse trail opportunities have made it a popular destination with 66 miles of singletrack trails open to bikes. Click here.

REVIEW ONLINE MAPS AND PROTECT TRAILS ON USFS LAND
The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is in the process of designating wheeled motor vehicle routes on the National Forests in California. IMBA California representatives recently met with Forest officials in Vallejo to discuss their route inventory process and ensure it includes mountain bike trails. Riders need to get involved and review the USFS Forest maps. According to the Forest Service, most inventories have been completed, but they assured us its not too late to point out missed trails. Click here.

Contact your local Forest Service officials to make corrections to the inventory. Also notify the IMBA California representative nearest you to alert them to your findings. They can assist in the process getting inventory corrections.

PG&E LANDS COULD BE A BOON TO RIDERS
Pacific Gas and Electric Company manages approximately 140,000 acres of watershed lands and reservoirs in California. As part of the Company's bankruptcy settlement, a Stewardship Council was established in 2004 to ensure that these watershed lands are conserved for a broad range of beneficial public values, including outdoor recreation. IMBA California representatives will attend upcoming public meetings -- it's important that mountain bikers come to the sessions and give their input. For info, click here.

COMMENTS NEEDED TO CREATE SHARED-USE TRAILS AT WILLOW CREEK (SONOMA CO.)
California State Parks has added the gorgeous 3,373-acre Willow Creek parcel to its Sonoma Coast State Beach holdings. IMBA representatives attended a public scoping meeting, where the tone was cordial and cooperative, with members of the public voicing the desire to make the park a model for shared-use trails. A public comment period for Willow Creek-Sonoma Coast State Beach General Plan has been extended to March 15. For general info and to register comments, click here.

IMBA-BUILT TRAILS UNDERWAY AT LOST COAST, VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
For a truly wilderness experience, there's nothing like the Lost Coast region of Northern California. The BLM has teamed with IMBA's trail expert Joey Klein and the Bigfoot Bicycle Club of Humboldt Bay to layout, design and build a 30-mile trail system. Construction is well underway, but trail volunteers are still needed. This is a unique opportunity to be a part of what will become a legendary trail system. Plan weekend visits to this magnificent area and volunteer your trailbuilding skills. For more details, visit the Bigfoot Bicycle Club website: click here.
