Calling All Bicycle-Enthusiasts!

The Seattle Bicycle Expo is coming up this weekend, March 10 & 11. We've lined up a full schedule of international stars, and we're welcoming vendors from around the country to exhibit the latest in bikes, gear, travel opportunities and more.

It's the largest consumer bike show in the country, so whether you're a seasoned racer, a rainy-day commuter or a fair-weather cruiser, there's sure to be something there for you.

Still not convinced? Here are 12 great reasons to join us for this year's show:

1) Party with the best of them. Everyone who's anyone in the bicycling world will be there to kick off another cycling season in the Pacific Northwest. So grab an espresso, a burger or a farm-fresh salad, chat with fellow attendees, and make plans to hang out all day.

2) Try before you buy. Online shopping can be convenient, it's true, but there's no substitute for testing out gear and chatting with knowledgeable vendors about your options. Plus, they'll have cool stuff on display that you won't see anywhere else.

3) Learn to make fun (and useful!) bikey stuff. Stop by the Cascade booth for free DIY clinics with a couple of local experts. You'll go home with the know-how to transform a blazer into a cycling cap, make your own reflective vest, and customize your ride.

4) Put your old bike tubes to use. Bring them by the Green Guru booth to donate for use in upcycled gear and accessories. In exchange, they'll make you an inner tube change pouch using their bicycle-powered sewing machine.

5) Jumpstart your fitness program. During drab Seattle winters, it's easy to spend more time on the couch than in the saddle. Let one of the many coaches at the show help you get out, get motivated, and set goals for this year's cycling season -- or sign up for a free clinic at the Cycling Camp San Diego booth.

6) Meet Ron Hayman, one of the legends of the sport. He's a pioneer of the bike-racing world, he's the captain of the famous Team 7-Eleven, and he'll be there all weekend, along with author Geoff Drake, who will tell the unexpected tale of the team's origins.

7) Entertain the kiddos. With interactive games, kid-friendly crafting, and a spectacular BMX jump show, Expo is a fun, affordable event that the whole family can enjoy. Kids 15 and under get in FREE, so load up your cargo bike (or mini-van) and bring 'em down to our Little Nutty Kids' Zone, presented by Nutcase Helmets.

8) Hone your dirt-riding skills. Sponsored by Evergreen Mountain Bike Club, our new Dirt Zone features some of the top names of the Pacific Northwest's mountain biking scene -- including Transition Bikes, GHY Bikes, Big Tree Cycles, and Lumberyard MTB -- plus a skills course for the young and the young-at-heart.

9) Hear from women on wheels. We're bringing in four awesome women from Portland, Ore. and Vancouver, B.C: Mia Birk is a powerhouse for bike-friendly transportation planning; Amy Walker and Ulrike Rodrigues co-founded Momentum Magazine; and Elly Blue is a writer and business-owner who has made a career of helping people get around by bike.

10) Pedal the world without leaving town. Representatives from bike touring companies will be there to tell you about travel opportunities around the globe. On stage, we'll have Willie Weir on Saturday and Robbin McKinney on Sunday -- so pull up a chair and let these story-tellers take you to exotic lands.

11) Give us your best shot. The popular Kenmore Camera Photo Contest is back again this year -- and you have until March 6 to send in your entries. Drop by the exhibit upstairs to choose your favorite.

12) Love your bicycle. Bring your own bike to the Group Health booth for a free bike fit by some of the best physical therapists in the business. They'll be there from 10 to 5 on Saturday and from 11 to 3 on Sunday to help you ride comfortably all season long.

Visit the Expo webpage for directions to Smith Cove Cruise Terminal by bike, bus or car. We'll see you there!
